Week of December 8th - 12th

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week we worked on rhyming, onset fluency, blending and identifying final and medial sounds. The children had two journal assignments and on Thursday they made Holiday cards for the Soldiers in Iraq. On Friday they will be enjoying Pajama Day in their classrooms and watching Polar Express

Math
This week we continued to work on both addition and subtraction. We also worked on relating addition and subtraction.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week the kids worked on reading and spelling two syllable words with V-E syllables. They also worked hard on writing in their journals. On Thursday they made Holiday cards for the Soldiers in Iraq. On Friday they will be enjoying Pajama Day in their classrooms and watching Polar Express.

Math
This week the students took their test on two digit subtraction. They did very well. We also started Chapter 8 which works on more two digit subtraction with and without subtraction.

Week of December 1st - 4th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts
This week in reading we worked on rhyming, onset fluency, blending and identifying final and medial sounds. On Monday we worked on a writing assignment about Snow. Lastly we continued to review our vowel sounds. Many of the children are struggling with this.

Math
This week we have been working on Chapter 6. This chapter focuses on using subtraction strategies to 12. In this chapter, the students use the strategy of counting back to find the difference. My students have also been using the number line to count back.



Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts
This week in Reading we have been working on daily journaling. The children are making great progress with this. In our Wilson Reading program we have been working on: vowel-consonant-e syllable words, long vowel sounds, and reading V-E words with suffixes.

Math
We have been working on Chapter 7 with double digit subtraction. The children are now able to subtract double digits and regroup when necessary. We will also use our skill of subtracting double digit numbers to problem solve. Please continue to practice subtraction facts with your child.

Week of November 17th - 21st

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week in Reading I went into Mrs. Cornfield's, Mrs. Micetich's and Mrs. Sis's classrooms. We worked on a Character Counts project and learned about Respect. The children made a class quilt. Each child made a square to represent themselves. We also made a turkey project for Thanksgiving.

Math
This week we completed our chapter on addition strategies and we moved on to the next chapter on subtraction strategies. We are now working with using a number line to subtract. We will learn other strategies next week.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week in Reading we worked on a Reading/Writing workshop. The children wrote a persuasive letter asking their parents for a pet. They worked on writing an opening, middle and closing paragraph. They worked very hard and they were very persuasive.

Math
We continued to work on addition with and without regrouping. We solved problems by using a table and also by using mental math. We will be having our chapter test next week.

Week of November 10th - 15th

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week in reading we worked on rhyming, onset fluency, blending and identifying final and medial sounds. On Friday we worked on a writing assignment about Thanksgiving. We also worked on glued sounds such as: am, an, all. Lastly we continue to review our vowel sounds. Many of the children are struggling with this.

Math
This week we worked on adding numbers to 12 while using various addition strategies. We used strategies such as: counting on, touch math, number lines and adding doubles.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week in reading we worked on vowel teams: aw, au. We also worked on syllable divison. Lastly we worked on suffixes: -ful, -less, -ment, -ness, -ish, -en, -able. The kids worked very hard this week. They are making great progress.

Math
We continued to practice addition with and without regrouping. We solved problems by using a table and also by estimating. Next week we will have a chapter test.

Week of November 3rd - 7th

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week in Reading we worked on rhyming, onset fluency, blending and identifying final and medial sounds. We also worked on our spelling words and sight words. On Friday we worked on a journal assignment and read a Fall book.
Math
This week we took our Chapter 4 Math test. The children did well on this. We also started Chapter 5 which works with adding numbers to 12 while working with various addition strategies. We used counting on, touch math and working with manipulatives.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
We worked with the suffixes -s, -es, -ed and -ing. I also introduced the suffixes -est and -er, as well as two additional sounds of -ed, /d/ and /t/. We worked on vowels teams including: oa, ow, ou, ue, oe, ow, ou, ue, oo and ew. The children also used their journals this week and on Friday we played Bingo with vowel team words.

Math
This week we continued to practice adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.

Week of October 27th - 31st

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week we worked on rhyming words, onset fluency, blending and identifying final and medial sounds. We also read Halloween books and made a special Frankenstein project.
Math
We continue to work with Chapter 4 in Math. We are focusing on addition and subtraction operations. We are also seeing how addition and subtraction are related.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
We worked on basewords and suffixes such as: -s, -es, -ing, -ed, - er, -est. We also worked on the oa, oe, ow vowel teams. The children journaled this week and wrote about their Halloween costumes.
Math
This week in Math we worked with regrouping. Next week we will be working on two digit addition. We will learn to add two digit problems with and without regrouping.

Halloween Projects




Pumpkin Projects

Last Friday our class joined Mrs. Spizzirri's classroom to make Witches Brew and Pumpkin cakes. The kids had a great time decorating their cakes and eating them too! On Monday we decorated gourds that were grown in Mrs. Micetich's garden. The children were very creative and had a lot of fun!

Week of October 20th - 24th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts
This week in Reading we worked on reading as a group and individually. We worked on rhyming words, inital and ending sounds, blends, sight words.

Math
This week in math we worked with both addition and subtraction. We explored how addition and subtraction are related, identify and write related facts, write number sentences to represent addition and subtraction situations and learn how to choose when to add or subtract.

Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts
This was another busy week in Reading and Language Arts. We worked on our journals this week. The children made sure they always started with a capital letter, used finger spacing, their best handwriting and ended with a punctuation mark. We read and spelled letters using glued sounds such as: onk, ong, ing, ink, all, am, an, ive, olt, old. We also worked with phonics.

Math
This week we worked on reviewing concepts that we have learned in this chapter: rounding, skip counting and greater than less than. We had our chapter test on Friday. Next week we will start on addition of two digit numbers.

Week of October 14th - 17th

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts
We were busy this week in Reading. We worked on segmenting words, substituting words, adding and deleting phonemes and reading with expression.
We also reviewed the formations of the letters a - z and worked on sight words.

Math
This week we continued to work on subtraction. The students used counters, pictures, and symbols to explore the concept of subtraction. Please keep working on addition and subtraction with your children at home.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
The second graders worked on segmenting words, substituting words, adding and deleting phonemes and reading with expression.
The also worked on vowel teams such as: ay, ai, ee, ea, ey.
Lastly we started on our journals. We will be writing in them three times a week.

Math
This week we worked on rounding numbers to the nearest ten. We also worked on skip counting and identifying patterns on a hundreds chart. They have been doing a great job on their homework assignments. Thank you for working with them at home!

Character Counts Gym Night


Character Counts Gym Night took place last Friday. It was a huge success! We had 121 students in attendance and many helpful parent volunteers. We were able to raise close to $800 to use throughout the year for the Character Counts program. These funds will be put towards books, assemblies, and projects. Here are some pictures from the evening.

Reading and Language Arts - This week we worked on rhyming with nonsense words. We also worked with onset fluency, blending and identifying final and medial sounds.

Math - We continued to work with subtraction concepts this week. Please practice addition and subtraction concepts with your children at home.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts - This week we worked on the bonus letters: ff, ll, and ss. We also worked with glued sounds such as: all, ang, ank, ing, ink, ong, onk, ung, unk, am, and an. The children worked very hard this week and I am very proud of them. Next week I will be introducing vowel teams to the children.

Math - This week we took our chapter test on place value to 100. We also started a new chapter on number patterns and concepts.

Week of September 29th - October 3rd

First Grade

Reading: We worked on segmenting words, adding phonemes, deleting phonemes and reading with expression. The children also worked hard on their sight words. Keep reading at home!

Math: This week we spent a lot of time working with number stories. The children used counters and pictures to explore the meaning of addition. We have also been working on different ways to use subtraction.

Second Grade

Reading: We were busy this week in Reading! We worked on closed syllables, diagraphs, blends, sight words, and reading with expression. The children did a great job this week.

Math: We are currently working on place value. We are also working on reading and writing numbers up to 100 and showing numbers in different ways.

RTI Begins

Our first two days of the new RTI program went very well! I will be working in Mrs. Micetich's, 1st grade classroom and Mrs. Beseth's, 2nd grade classroom. I am so happy that I can work with so many new students this year. I will be focusing mainly on the Wilson Fundations Reading program. The Wilson Fundations program is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom.

Week of September 15th - 19th

This week in Math we continued to work with addition strategies. We also started looking at subtraction strategies. The children have been doing a great job with their school work and they continue to do well with bringing their homework back daily.
This week in Reading we read books about Scarecrows and made an art project. We had another great week!

Week of September 8th - 12th

We had another great week together! In Math we focused on addition strategies. The children have done very well with their work this week. In Reading we worked on sight words, guided reading, spelling, and phonics games.
Next week in Math we will continue to work with addtion strategies. In Reading the 2nd graders worked hard on writing short stories with illustrations. They are very proud of their work and they were able to share their stories with each other. Next week we will be reading the story Julius. This is a funny story about a pig that acts like a person.

Welcome Back!

It has been a wonderful week! It was great to meet many of you at our Open House on Monday. I know this will be an exciting school year. Mark your calendars for our 1st and 2nd grade Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 10th. I hope to see many of you there.

This week I started my 1st and 2nd grade Math groups. I will be starting my Reading and Language Arts groups on September 22nd. I am looking forward to helping your children this year.

We started our new chapter on multiplication. The children are just learning the basic concepts and they will learn more about it in third grade.

This week we read Fireflies for Nathan. This is a story about a boy who spends some time with his Grandparents. They catch fireflies in a jar just like his father used to do when he was six years old.

This week we read the story The School Mural. This is a story about a group of children who work together to paint a mural for their school.
We took a trip to Prairieview and met our pen pals. We also went on a tour of the school.

This week we continued our chapter on telling time. We worked on telling time to the hour and half an hour. We also worked with using calendars.

This week we read a story called Carousel. This is a story about a girl who is disappointed when her birthday party turns into a bad day. We made inferences as we read and we talked about verbs, past and present.

We read a several stories about butterflies this week. We focused on a non-fiction story called See How They Grow: Butterfly. This true story uses real photographs to help show us a butterflies development from an egg to adulthood.

This week we started our new chapter on telling time. Our class focused on the difference between a second, minute and an hour. We also looked at the difference between the hour and minute hands.

This week we read a story called Jalapeño Bagels. This story is about a boy and his family and how they get ready for an important event at school. We also worked on contractions and verbs this week.
We also tried a recipe from the story. Please look for the Chango bar recipe that I will be sending home.

This week we worked on a reading/writing workshop. Our focus was on writing a narrative essay about a personal experience. We talked about the elements of a good story. We also worked on abbreviations and proofreading our work.

We completed our chapter on time this week. Next week we will start the next chapter on measurement.

Week of February 4th - 8th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts:
Sight words to study at home include:

This week we read about a girl who has trouble with some animals who get into her house. We will find out how each animal adds to the mess and confusion, and what the girl does to get rid of them.

Spelling:
The children did a great job on their spelling tests this week! Words for next week include: day, may, play, say, stay, way, away, holiday

Math:
We started our chapter on money this week. The children will explore understanding money through the use of concrete materials.


Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts:
This week we focused on learning about African-American History and Chinese New Year.
Next week we will be reading a story called Ant. This is a photographic non-fiction book that examines the physical characteristics, life cycle and natural habitat of various types of ants.
Please continue to have your child read the leveled books that I am sending home with them.

Spelling:
Words for next week include: king, thank, hand, sing, send, think, bring, bang, end, thing, and, long, grand, young

Math:
We continue to work on our chapter on time. This week the children worked on topics such as elapsed time, telling time to the quarter hour and reading and using information in a schedule.

First Grade

Reading

This week we read about a girl who finds a pig in her watermelon patch and she can't get rid of her. We also worked on summarizing and story structure. Please continue to work on sight words at home and read leveled readers.

The children did a great job on their spelling tests this week! Words for next week include: eat,feet, he, me, mean, see, maybe, sheep

Math
This week we continued our chapter on number patterns and place value.

Second Grade
Reading
This week we began our new theme this week, Amazing Animals. Our first story is a fantasy called Officer Buckle and Gloria. We will focus on drawing conclusions and monitoring our reading. We will also talk about nouns and pronouns.
I will also be sending home leveled readers with your child. Please read these together at home.

Spelling
The children did very well on their spelling tests this week. We will not be having a spelling test next week due to the short week.

Math
We completed our chapter on double digit subtraction. On Tuesday we started the next chapter on telling time. Please practice this at home.

First Grade

This week we read The Kite. This is a story about a mother who makes a kite for her children. Unfortunately, the kite gets lost. We also read a story about how to make kites.

Math: This week we explored the strategy of grouping tens as a way to understand and use numbers greater than 10. We also focused on skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's.


Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts:
This week we wrapped up Theme 3 with an overview of what we have learned. We read a realistic fiction book titled Grandpa's Corner Store and a non-fiction story titled Barrio: Jose's Neighborhood.
We worked on comprehension strategies including: summarizing, making judgments, problem solving and making inferences.
I will also be sending home leveled readers with your child. Please read these together at home.


Spelling: Words for next week include: car, smart, arm, park, yard, part, barn, hard, party, farm, are, warm, start, far

Math: We continued to work on double digit subtraction. We will also learn how to check subtraction with addition.

This week we read about a girl who looks at lots of maps to find out just where in the world she lives. In our reading, we will learn to generalize about what maps show us and why they are useful.

Math: This week we started on new chapter on complex patterns and numbers to 100.


Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts:
We read a story called Jamaica Louise James. It is a story about a girl who has an idea that brightens her grandmother's birthday as well as a city subway station.
We also looked at spelling changes that nouns make when they are plural.

Spelling: Words for next week include: which, teach, wash, tray, frown, we, eat, when, teeth, sharp, sail, found, be, tree, chase, than, play, train, mouse, please

Math: We continue to work on double digit subtraction. We will also learn how to check subtraction with addition.

First Grade

This week we read a story about a hermit crab that examines a variety of seashells before finding just the right one to call home. We also read many non-fiction books about hermit crabs. This week we also worked with digraphs. We worked with “sh, th, wh, and ch” blends.


Spelling: The boys worked really hard on their spelling words this week. Words for next week include: make, came, take, name, gave, game, place, skate


Math:
This week we continued our chapter on fair share, fractions and equal parts. We will begin our next chapter on complex patterns and numbers to 100 next week.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts:
This week in reading we read a story called The Big Bushy Mustache. In order to look more like his father, Ricky borrows part of a costume from school. After he loses it on his way home, Ricky learns a lesson about responsibility.
Vocabulary words included: bushy, disguise, mirror, mustache, handsome, costume


Spelling: Everyone did really well on their tests this week. Words for next week include: clean, keep, please, feel, we, be, eat, tree, mean, read, the, people, he, see


Math:
This week we worked on subtracting two-digit numbers with and without regrouping. This is very challenging for many of the students.

Welcome Back!


We have had another busy week. I was glad to see all my students again and hear about their winter break. Lizzy and Cutie Pie grew a lot over the break. Here are some new pictures of them.
