Week of April 21st - 25th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts
Please continue to study sight words at home.
This week we read a story called When I Grow Old With You. This is a story about the special bond between a grandfather and grandchild.
Please keep reading the books in the children's purple folders.

Spelling
Words for next week include: dishes, dresses, boxes, beaches, wishes, kisses

Math
This week the children started our chapter on measurement. They are doing very well. We measured with inches and centimeters. We have also been exploring weight.

Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts
We did not read a regular story from our Reading Anthology this week. Instead we focused on Earth Day projects and completed our expository paper about Rain forest animals. The children did a great job on their papers! I am very proud of them.
Please continue to read the books that I have been sending home with the children.

Spelling
Words for next week include: zoo, tooth, hook, moon, book, soon, took, good, room, foot, you, who, school

Math
We continued our work with fractions this week. The children have a very good understanding of the concept. Next week we will have our chapter test and we will start on adding and subtraction three digit numbers.

Week of April 14th - 18th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts
Please continue to study sight words at home.
We did not introduce a new reading theme this week due to our unit of study on chicks. Next week we will be reading a story called When I Grow Old With You. This is a story about the special bond between a grandfather and grandchild.

Math
This week we learned about probability. We also started on our next chapter and worked with measurement.


Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts
This week we read a story called Thundercake. This is a story about a little girl who is afraid of thunderstorms. We focused on sequence of events, base words, and the verbs is, was and were.
Please continue to read the books that I have been sending home with the children.

Spelling
Words for next week include: rainforest and review words

Math
We continued our work with fractions this week. We will explore fractions that name more than one part and work to identify fractions that are part of a group.

Week of April 7th - 11th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts
Please continue to study sight words at home.
This week we read a biography about Johnny Appleseed. We also learned about the life cycle of an apple tree. We reviewed strategies for making predictions and inferences and learned how to read a time line.

Spelling
Next week we will be working on chick words.

Math
This week we continued our chapter on telling time. We worked on telling time to the hour and half an hour. We also worked with using calendars.

Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week we read a story called Carousel. This is a story about a girl who is disappointed when her birthday party turns into a bad day. We made inferences as we read and we talked about verbs, past and present.

Words for next week include: batted, running, clapped, stopped, getting, shopping, stepped, hugging, pinned, sitting, that, shop

Math
This week we will started our new chapter on geometry. We identified shapes, learned about space shapes, and used pattern blocks to make new shapes.

Week of March 31st - April 4th

First Grade

Reading and Language Arts
Please continue to study sight words at home.
We read a several stories about butterflies this week. We focused on a non-fiction story called See How They Grow: Butterfly. This true story uses real photographs to help show us a butterflies development from an egg to adulthood.

Spelling
Words for next week include: checking, missed, filled, sleeping, landed, telling, bluffing, planted

Math
This week we started our new chapter on telling time. Our class focused on the difference between a second, minute and an hour. We also looked at the difference between the hour and minute hands.


Second Grade

Reading and Language Arts
This week we read a story called JalapeƱo Bagels. This story is about a boy and his family and how they get ready for an important event at school. We also worked on contractions and verbs this week.
We also tried a recipe from the story. Please look for the Chango bar recipe that I will be sending home.

Spelling
Words for next week include: puppy, baby, lucky, happy, very, lady, funny, silly, many, only, cookie, me, bee

Math
This week we finished up our chapter on patterns and numbers to 1,000. Next week we will be starting our new chapter on geometry. We will identify shapes, learn about space shapes, and use pattern blocks to make new shapes.
