Week of March 19th - 23rd

2nd Grade Math
This week we took our Chapter test on Measurement. When we return from Spring Break we will be working with weight, mass, capacity and temperature.

1st Grade Reading
We are working on Unit 10 of the Wilson Fundations program. In this unit students will learn to blend and segment up to five sounds in a closed syllable.

2nd Grade Reading
We are working on Unit 12 of the Wilson Fundations program. In this unit students are practicing with two more vowel teams: oi and oy. Students have learned that oy is used only at the end of a syllable, while oi is used at the beginning or in the middle of a syllable.

Week of March 12th - 16th

2nd Grade Math
This week we have been working with measurement. My students have been having fun working on a lot of hands on activities in the classroom. They are learning to make estimates using inches, feet and yards. They will also learn how to measure in centimetes and meters. We also continue to review skills learned earlier in the year including: double digit addition and subtraction, telling time and counting change.

1st Grade Reading
We completed Unit 9 of our Wilson Fundations program. Our next unit does not introduce any new sounds. Instead students will learn to blend and segment up to five sounds in a close syllable.

2nd Grade Reading
We are working on Unit 12 of the Wilson Fundations program. In this unit students are working with two new vowel teams: oi and oy.

Week of March 5th - 8th

Welcome to Mr. Diamond, our new student teacher! He will be working in my classroom for the next seven weeks.

2nd Grade Math
We have started our new chapter on measurement. We will be learning to measure in inches, centimeters, feet and yards. I will be sending home rulers with the kids. They may keep those at home to assist with homework.

1st Grade Reading
We are working on Unit 9 of our Wilson Fundations program. In this unit we are learning about closed syllables. Closed syllables can only have one vowel. The vowel is followed by one or more consonants (closed in). The vowel sound is short.
Examples: click, chunk, sniff

2nd Grade Reading
We are working on Unit 11 of our Wilson Fundations program. In this unit students will practice three new vowel teams: ee, ea and ey. Each of these letter combinations can have the long e sound and are found in double vowel syllables.
Examples: steam, sheep, hockey, indeed

Week of February 27th - March 2nd

2nd Grade Math
We have been working with plane figures to make new figures. We have also worked with rotation of shapes and lines of symmetry.

1st Grade Reading
We are currently working on Unit 9 of our Wilson Fundations program. This unit reviews the reading and spelling of previous word patterns. No new word patterns are taught, just a new concept.
The new concept in closed syllables. Closed syllables can only have one vowel. The vowel is followed by one or more consonants. The vowel sound is short.
