We did not introduce a new reading theme this week due to our unit of study on chicks. Next week we will be reading a story called When I Grow Old With You. This is a story about the special bond between a grandfather and grandchild.

This week we learned about probability. We also started on our next chapter and worked with measurement.
Second Grade
Reading and Language Arts
This week we read a story called Thundercake. This is a story about a little girl who is afraid of thunderstorms. We focused on sequence of events, base words, and the verbs is, was and were.

Math
We continued our work with fractions this week. We will explore fractions that name more than one part and work to identify fractions that are part of a group.

First Grade
Reading and Language Arts

This week we read a biography about Johnny Appleseed. We also learned about the life cycle of an apple tree. We reviewed strategies for making predictions and inferences and learned how to read a time line.

Spelling
Next week we will be working on chick words.
Math
This week we continued our chapter on telling time. We worked on telling time to the hour and half an hour. We also worked with using calendars.

This week we read a story called Carousel. This is a story about a girl who is disappointed when her birthday party turns into a bad day. We made inferences as we read and we talked about verbs, past and present.

Reading and Language Arts

We read a several stories about butterflies this week. We focused on a non-fiction story called See How They Grow: Butterfly. This true story uses real photographs to help show us a butterflies development from an egg to adulthood.

Words for next week include: checking, missed, filled, sleeping, landed, telling, bluffing, planted
Math
This week we started our new chapter on telling time. Our class focused on the difference between a second, minute and an hour. We also looked at the difference between the hour and minute hands.

This week we read a story called JalapeƱo Bagels. This story is about a boy and his family and how they get ready for an important event at school. We also worked on contractions and verbs this week.
We also tried a recipe from the story. Please look for the Chango bar recipe that I will be sending home.

This week we read a story called, The Forest. This is a non-fiction story about the different plants and animals that we may encounter in the woods. As we read we practiced predicting to guess what else we may find in the forest.

Math
We are still working on addition and subtraction and how they relate to each other. When we get back from spring break we will be focusing on telling time.

This week we worked on a reading/writing workshop. Our focus was on writing a narrative essay about a personal experience. We talked about the elements of a good story. We also worked on abbreviations and proofreading our work.
